What are knitting frames and knitting looms?
Knitting frames and knitting rings are tools that enable knitting without traditional knitting needles. They are usually made of plastic or wood and are fitted with evenly spaced hooks or pins around which the wool is guided.
Knitting frames are usually rectangular or oval, although other models such as S-shaped or modular frames, which can be individually extended, are also available. Depending on the model, you can use them to knit in both rounds and rows. With extra-large knitting frames, even blankets are possible.
Knitting rings, on the other hand, are always round and often somewhat smaller. They are often used for slightly smaller projects. You can also work in the round or in rows with knitting rings. The working method is the same for both: the yarn is wrapped around the pins and then pulled over with a hook. The great thing about it? You don’t have to handle knitting needles as with traditional knitting and you don’t have to maneuver stitches.
Who are knitting frames and knitting rings suitable for?
Knitting frames and knitting rings are particularly suitable for people who find traditional knitting with needles too difficult or painful. These are, for example
Knitting beginners and children: The knitting frame and ring are ideal for beginners or children who are just starting to knit. As the technique is easy to learn, even young knitters can quickly experience a sense of achievement and be motivated by their progress.
People with arthritis or joint problems: For people who struggle with painful hands or joints – such as those with arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome or other rheumatic conditions – knitting frames and knitting rings offer relief. The movements required for winding and lifting the stitches put less strain on the hands than traditional knitting with knitting needles.
People with limited dexterity: After a stroke or due to neurological disorders, dexterity can be severely limited. It is then often difficult to guide the needles precisely during conventional knitting. Knitting frames and knitting rings provide a stable structure and make it possible to guide the yarn with minimal effort. This reduces the need for fine motor skills and makes knitting more accessible.
Blind people and people with visual impairments: People with impaired vision can also use knitting frames and rings to enjoy their favorite hobby. The stitches sit firmly on the pins, are easy to feel and cannot fall off.
Seniors: Older people who suffer from age-related loss of hand strength often find knitting with needles tiring or frustrating. Knitting frames and knitting rings are an excellent alternative because they are easier to use and make knitting
much less strenuous.
Why you should try knitting with a frame or ring
For people who struggle with chronic pain, limited mobility or other physical impairments, knitting frames and knitting rings offer many advantages. Firstly, there is less strain on the hands and joints.
Traditional knitting requires repeated gripping and pushing of the needles, which can be stressful if you have painful or stiff joints. Knitting frames and knitting rings allow for much more relaxed handling, as there is little strain on the fingers and the movements are smoother.
The stable position of the frame also makes things easier: while the position of the work has to be constantly adjusted when knitting with needles, the knitting frame remains stable and in a fixed position. People who have difficulties with fine motor skills often find it more comfortable to use a stable frame.
If you want to work quickly and efficiently, knitting frames and rings can also be a good option. With a little practice, you can knit larger projects very quickly without feeling exhausted.
Just knitting tubes? That was yesterday!
Despite their practical advantages, knitting frames and knitting rings often have a bad reputation. They are sometimes dismissed as “a simple version of proper knitting” that is less creative or less professional. Many people think they can only be used to knit simple tubes or coarse-meshed hats.
And yes, knitting rings and frames do not offer the full flexibility of knitting needles. For example, it is difficult to work knitted pieces that require many decreases and increases or contain complex patterns. Also, knitted pieces made with a knitting frame often look different from those made with knitting needles. The stitches are usually more even and have a smoother surface because they are held at a controlled distance by the pins. In contrast, items knitted with knitting needles are somewhat more elastic and flexible, depending on the technique and stitch type.
And where can you buy knitting frames?
Unfortunately, loom knitting, as knitting with frames or rings is known in English-speaking countries, is much less popular in Germany, meaning that there are usually only a few models available in stores. In the USA, on the other hand, you can even find small family businesses that produce their own frames by hand. From extra-fine knitted rings especially for socks to jumbo frames for blankets, the range is much larger there. Three suppliers who also ship to Germany are:
KISS Looms: www.kisslooms.com
KB Authentic Knitting Board: www.knittingboard.com
CinDWood Knitting Looms: www.cindwoodlooms.com
Simpler plastic frames and rings can also be found in craft and needlework stores.
